Mimi Tompkins – Managing Stress

MimiStress_11-7-13_MAINBallet can be one of the most stressful things. Being completely dedicated is a must in the recipe to make a professional dancer, but it is also important to find ways to wind down and take your mind off of the job. One of the things my mom always tells me is to “make sure to live your life outside of ballet to enrich your art. Every shade of life will add another dimension to your dancing.” I truly believe in this and have to remind myself sometimes to give the ballet thoughts a rest. Its so easy to let the competition and need for perfection to consume you.

After a long day of dancing, I often paint or draw to take my mind elsewhere. I have always been interested in art. I love expressing myself through art, so sometimes its nice to do it in another form than dance.

Some other things I enjoy doing are going out to dinner with friends or watching a movie in theaters. Two other apprentices in NBoC live very close to me, so often times after work; we get together and just have a good laugh. It’s nice to have friends close by who I can completely be myself around and get to act like normal teenagers with. Most recently, we took a trip to Ikea to browse the giant store, as well as getting a yummy and cost efficient dinner. We always find new fun things to do!

Getting out is also important for me. I like being in tune with the city and experiencing what goes on in the world other than in my own head! Some of my favorite things in Toronto are the street festivals and events. There is always something exciting going on in this big city, so it’s a really great way for me to see another world in addition to ballet.
