Diversity in Dance, Riverside City College

At Riverside City College, in Riverside CA, the topic on everyone’s tongue is diversity in dance! This year’s spring dance concert, CelebrateDance 2012, features student choreography and is directed by Associate Professor of Dance, Rita Chenoweth-Surman.

The RCC dance department participates as a group in the DDS Dance Teacher Program as well as individually since many of them teach at multiple schools, studios, and companies in the area. When costuming a piece Chenoweth-Surman counts on DDS for the basic items stating that items such as bike shorts often have to much distracting decoration at traditional retail stores. This year the must have item from DDS is the Capezio Team Basics Camisole Leotard in “Nude.” [Item TB1420]

They are using the leotards primarily as undergarments to facilitate quick changes throughout the show. The beautiful RCC dancers have a wide range of skin tones and the TB1420 will be dyed to match each individual dancer, a technique Chenoweth-Surman has used in the past to achieve a truly invisible undergarment. Using points earned with their DTP number RCC was able to purchase 20+ leos, and didn’t have to spend a dime!

The undergarment leotards will be providing essential coverage especially in a modern piece choreographed by students Delfiña Smith and Ericka Brown that explores what lies beneath the clichéd stereotypes people desire to force themselves into.  Roughly half of the large cast for this piece are male dancers for whom DDS has been the place to turn to for dance belts (such as item N26, N5930, and 28). The diverse students in the RCC dance program are among the finest dancers in country and were the only community college chosen to perform at the gala concert for the American College Dance Festival in 2011.

CelebrateDance 2012 is on stage May 3rd, 4th, and 5th at 8pm in Landis Performing Arts Center at Riverside City College and tickets are on sale now! For ticket information please call the box office at (951) 222-8100 or visit their website at http://www.landispac.com/events.jsp.
